CANDLELIT BOWLS AT THE WITTERINGS

When Chris Horsley, current secretary of the Witterings & District Bowls Club, moved from Surrey to Wittering she introduced the idea of candlelit bowls which she had enjoyed with her previous club.

The idea was greeted with enthusiasm and has been a regular ending to the season’s play at Witterings for many years.

Solar lighting has now replaced a lamplighter, matches in hand, constantly reigniting the jam jar held candles continually snuffed out by the wind so now at least, the rinks remain in view.

This year a fish and chip supper was enjoyed by over 30 members while watching the sun go down until darkness heralded the start of play.

Matches involve a great deal of shouting with markers trying to direct bowlers aiming for an almost invisible jack, measuring is somewhat debateable and scoring is accepted on a ‘near enough’ basis.

All great fun and the perfect friendly way to bring another successful season to a close.
