END OF YEAR SUMMARY - December 2010

posted 6 Dec 2010, 10:19 by Jen Knotts   [ updated 6 Dec 2010, 12:40 by Witterings & District Bowls Club ]

The 2009-10 season is now at an end. We've had some good matches, some great matches and some matches we would rather forget but we're all still smiling and looking forward to 2011.

The ladies were promoted to division one in the C & M league - a brilliant result. The mens position in the L G League couldn't compare but with a number of new members now gaining in confidence and accuracy we aim for improvement next year.

The culmination of the season was Presentation Night held on the  27th November. The village hall and dining tables were decked overall, Jim's bar kept us well watered, the raffle table was groaning and after a sumptuous meal provided by 'The Boulevard' cups and medals were presented to winning members.  The dancing commenced and a great time was had by all.

My thanks to all members and associates for their input during the season and may 2011 be a happy, healthy and successful year for everyone.
Fred Knotts (chairman)

The Pavilion was full when the Barn Sea Anglers joined us for this social evening. Six tables of teams pitted their expertise in completing quizzes ranging from music and general knowledge to identifying the celebrities.
Darts were thrown to decide on the overall winners which is still somewhat of a mystery!
A handsome ploughmans supper was served by Jean Edwards,Jackie Clapton and Judy Bangs, the well supported raffle was drawn and the bar was nearly drunk dry.
The evening resulted in a handsome profit which was divided equally between the two clubs.
A good time was had by all.

04/05 Sept. Club Finals Weekend

posted 6 Sept 2010, 13:27 by Jen Knotts   [ updated 6 Sept 2010, 13:41 by Witterings & District Bowls Club ]

The Club Finals weekend of September 4 and 5th started off with the Ladies and Mens 100 up, The Juniors and The Veterans. Marina Aylward gave Carole a tough game in the Ladies 100 up, but Carole battled on and won. John Langworthy in the mens 100 up played Mark White and luckily for John beat him. Mark was one of our newer members of recent years who John coached. Our Juniors also was played by 2 our our newer members, John Hardy and Lindsay Bangs and this was won by Lindsay. In our veterans competition Ray Stephens beat Fred Knotts. I don’t think Ray wants any other name on this cup as he has won it for the past few years.

After a delicious BBQ provided by Lindsay and Judy Bangs the afternoon kicked off with the Ladies Singles - Chris Horsley beating Jean Edwards. The Mens Singles with Fred Knotts beating Jim Slogrove and our Club Pairs with Lindsay Bangs and Jan Derkatsch winning against Maureen Mulligan and Stuart Hooker.

Sunday dawned with yet another day of great bowling but unfortunately the sun stayed hidden for most of the day. In the morning Mark White beat Jim Slogrove in the handicap, Jim having to give Mark 6 shots, Paul Chivers beat Keith Maxwell in the 2 wood and Fred Knotts beating Lindsay Bangs in the Club Championship. After a break for another BBQ, Sunday afternoon provided a nail biting finale. Chris Horsely and Pat Hutton won the Ladies Pairs over Carole Tuffin and Violet Jeffryes, Stuart Hooker and Derek Jeffryes lost the Mens pairs after an extra end and on the final wood, and the Triples provided a Hot Shot. Roger Smith, Les Cross and Barbara Newman were trailing from behind and put pressure on the hot shot side of Georgina Porter, Judy Bangs and Fred Knotts, to be only 1 behind on the 17th end. The lead changed with each wood on the 18th end but finally the hot shot team clinched it.

Thanks to all the helpers over the weekend, especially Carole Tuffin, Fred Knotts, Jim Slogrove our greenkeeper, and Mark White. Also many thanks to Lindsay and Judy Bangs for feeding the 5000 both days.

Ros Hanbury,
Competition Secretary

Witterings invited 9 other clubs to join them in their Mens Invitation Tournament. The clubs were Bognor Tourists, City Club, Worthing Pavilion, West Sussex Tourists, London Transport, Pagham, Hotham, Little Spain and three teams from the Witterings.
It turned out to be a very close tournament with first place going to Worthing Pavilion skipped by Barry Torode, second place to City Club skipped by Alan Bowler and third place to Witterings '3' skipped by Dave Bell.
The adjudicators for the afternoon were Chris Horsley and Carole Tuffin with John Langworthy as umpire.
It turned out to be a very windy afternoon and everyone was pleased to come in to a lovely meal provided by Jean Edwards with her helpers Judy Bangs, Barbara Newman and Maureen Mulligan. The bar was managed by Keith Maxwell.

President Frank Bray welcomed 46 players and several special guests to his President’s day.  The afternoon consisted of 5 rinks playing 18 ends and 1 rink playing 10 ends made up of the injured hero’s .  After a very wet start in the morning the afternoon turned out just fine for bowling.  The rinks were made up of new and experienced bowlers and a lot of fun was had by all.  The winning team with a +21 shot difference were:  Terry Passant, George Thomas, Terry Mulligan and Chris Horsley (s) and the runners up with shot difference +18 were Leslie Bourne, Les Cros,s Keith Maxwell and Peg Lillywhite (s).  There was also a prize for the Injured Hero’s and the winners were Phil White, Frank Chatfield and Ros Hanbury (s).

Frank also mentioned in his speech for the three life members who had come, two of them managed to play Leslie Bourne, Roger Smith and Pat Smith and to his other guests Jenny Knotts, Michael Kempn and Frank Chatfield and of course not forgetting his wife Diane for all her support over the last year.

A Buffet meal was supplied by Jean Edwards and her helpers.  Jim Slogrove run the bar all afternoon, and prizes were presented to the winning rinks and the raffle was drawn which brought and end to a very enjoyable afternoon.  Many thanks to everyone who helped to made it such a wonderful day.
