SEP 15th 2017 CANDLELIGHT BOWLS AND SUPPER

posted 18 Sep 2017, 04:24 by Jen Knotts

Heavy rain showers didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the thirty members who turned up for the final social event of the season.
Stuart and Val had decorated the pavilion and the tables were set for everyone to enjoy a delicious meal of chilli beef or chicken curry provided by the Boulevard
and all organised by Ros.
By  the time the meal was finished the sky had darkened and the bowling greens looked like the runways at Gatwick airport with amazingly straight lines of
solar lights defining the playing areas.
The matches were played - between showers -  with much shouting, laughter and flashing torches and a winning team of Chris, Sheila, Geoff and Fred finally emerged.
Everyone returned to the pavilion, replenished the glasses and attempted to produce the answers to the two quizzes set by Stuart.
A great evening and thanks to all those who made it happen.

WITTERING’S WONDER WOMAN

Diminutive Carole Tuffin has proved to be a giant on the bowling green by winning the Victor Ludorum Trophy in this year’s Finals Weekend competitions.
Carole reached five finals and won three which gave her the winning number of points to secure the trophy which has not been held by a lady since 1999.

Carole Tuffin has been a member of the Witterings & District Bowls Club for 26 years. She has held every position from tea lady to President, is held in high regard, not only by Wittering members but throughout the County and is a mine of information on every bowling subject from dress codes to rules and everything in between.

The Wittering bowlers salute you Carole and are proud to have you in their midst.

SEP 6th 2017 LADIES INVITATION TOURNAMENT

posted 7 Sep 2017, 10:11 by Jen Knotts   [ updated 10 Sep 2017, 12:05 by Witterings & District Bowls Club ]

The Witterings & District welcomed teams of Ladies from around our area to their Ladies Invitation Tournament on Wednesday 6 September. There were 10 visiting Clubs attending and 2 teams from Wittering, making a full 6 rinks. Everyone was invited to share a glass of ‘Sangria’ on their arrival before the start of the afternoons match.

We had group photographs and then there was a ‘spider’ to start and a collection taken for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust - a wonderful Charity that looks after very poorly children and their families in their own home. A donation of £100 will be sent to them shortly.

The Ladies played 3 sessions of 8 ends, changing rinks after each session and each Club playing 3 other Clubs during the afternoon. The weather was very kind to us and there was plenty of laughter and friendly banter around the green and the match was played in very good spirit.

There was a fantastic raffle with over 60 prizes which had been donated by the Wittering Ladies and our visitors. It was manned by 2 Wittering Ladies who raised a good sum for Club funds. There was also a draw for a special bottle of Vodka donated by the Club’s Chairman.

Following the match the Ladies enjoyed a lovely meal in the Pavilion which was bought, prepared and cooked by 2 wonderful Witterings Ladies (and a Gentleman!). The meal was served by gentlemen club members who were beautifully turned out in their ‘waiters’ uniforms complete with bow ties and waistcoats. They were much admired by all the ladies! There were many compliments received for all the catering.
Our adjudicator announced the prize winners explaining that the match had been extremely close, especially in 2nd and 3rd place. He was finally able to announce that 3rd place was won by Norfolk Ladies, and 2nd place by Rogate Ladies. Everyone was then very surprised (not least the winning team themselves!) and delighted to hear that the winners, who had in fact lost their first session, were one of the Witterings own team of Ladies. There were then more photographs, the winners presented with their prizes and the new Ladies Tournament shield handed to the winning team.
Thanks to all the hard work of so many Club Members, our greenkeeper who had prepared the green very early in the morning (with help from his faithful doggie friend ‘Bill’), our President on his hands and knees very early working on the green’s ditches and surrounds, our Vice Chairman preparing the equipment on the rinks and arranging the various furniture around the green. Inside the Pavilion 2 more Lady Members laid out the tables, dressed them expertly and so beautifully even with fresh flower decorations! Our President and his wife were kept busy looking after the bar all afternoon (and evening), and our Treasurer for his excellent adjudicating and as match Umpire.

Many thanks must go to our Ladies Captain who has done such a great job this year under difficult circumstances and also to our Club Chairman for all her help, support and encouragement.
This was a fantastic day that will be remembered for a long time in the Witterings & District Bowls Club – especially by the author of this report.

Chris.

SEP 2nd & 3rd 2017 FINALS WEEKEND RESULTS.

posted 7 Sep 2017, 10:07 by Jen Knotts   [ updated 9 Sep 2017, 06:42 ]

The club competition finalists were well supported by members and friends as they played their matches over the two day period.
The Saturday matches  were played in perfect conditions but on Sunday the weather deteriorated steadily as the day progressed and by the afternoon
wet suits for the players and umbrellas for the wiggies were the dress code.
All the matches were played in great spirit with the standard well worthy of a final.
In spite of the weather everything ran smoothly thanks to the planning and organisation by our competition secretary Gwilym Morgan.
(I think they need him at British Rail).

Witterings 90 - Danbury 76

On the hottest Bank Holiday for years a coach full of Danbury bowlers and supporters managed to get to us after being
held up in the 'day tripper' traffic.
Six friendly triple matches of eighteen ends were played with Wittering winning over all by fourteen shots.
After light refreshments and a good deal of banter they departed to join the coastal traffic once again.
A great afternoon enjoyed by all.
