Our Trip to the Costa Del Sol.

After an uneventful trip to the airport (thanks to Ricky Kelly) we all arrived safely at our hotel albeit quite late where we were sped through reception and into a late dinner in the hotel restaurant. Sunday was a free day but due to the torrential rain most stayed in the hotel. The rest of the week was hot and sunny and allowed us to play our matches without interruption. Not being used to playing on the rather different surfaces than here we did find it difficult. Our first match at Benalmadena finished 3 rinks all, our second at the Super Bowl resulted in a win on one rink, our third at Mijas resulted in one drawn game and our fourth in one win and one draw at Benavista. It is of no doubt we were well received at all the clubs but their facilities at times left some things to be desired. On Saturday morning we were able to arrange another game against another touring team and playing four rinks we won on all.

We were impressed by the organisation of Bowling Abroad who organised the events in Spain but a special mention must go to Ken Clark who dealt with all the work at this end. The hotel Riu BelPlaya lived up to its 4 star rating providing us all with excellent food and comfortable, clean rooms. The members who travelled expressed a wish to do a follow-up tour next year to Portugal where we will be able to play on grass and we hope to be able to set this in motion soon subject to approval.

On an Indian Summers September Saturday Captain Ros and her ladies challenged Captain Gwilym and his men to an afternoon of fun bowls. Unfortunately a few our our ladies were on holiday and Captain Ros invited some of her other bowling friend ladies to join in. Many thanks to Frederika, Bryonny and Collette for joining us. Even though she tried her hardest with all sorts of handicapping Ros had to announce the Gents won. Their top rink was presented with the coveted trophy and a bottle of wine each. We all then enjoyed hot dogs - thank you Jan and her team - and a raffle. Many thanks to all who participated and helped in whatever way.

Captain Ros.

In the balmy, twilight evening, as the sun begins to sink
The little fairy lights began to illuminate each rink
For the ‘Candlelit Evening’, we didn’t use one candle
Solar powered lights were put to use, and were easier to handle

A year had gone and Candlelit Bowls, had come round once again
Warm weather and full moon, not like last year’s wind and rain!
Forty members attended, with thirty in eight teams
But playing bowls with little light, is harder than it seems

With lots of fun and laughter, Stuart is heard to bark
“Perhaps I should stick to this, I play better in the dark”
Six teams played ten ends each, but two teams got quite flustered
When the Queen of Hearts stopped her game, to go and stir the custard.
Fancy dress with Hippies, Queen of Hearts, Cruella and an Afghan
But the prizes went to Cleopatra and a very chubby Batman
The meal it was a great success, washed down with wine and beer
Get your fancy dress, night vision goggles, ready for next year.

This year’s new bowlers at The Witterings & District Bowls Club enjoyed their own Singles Competition at the club this week. There were 13 new bowling members taking part and the Competition was played on ‘a round robin’ basis. All the bowlers have been through the coaching sessions at the club and will be a great asset in future years. It was a very long day for the bowlers but everyone said who much they had enjoyed the experience and were looking forward to playing the Club Competitions next year. The New Bowlers Champion for this year was Sue Dobson who just pipped Peter Batchelor to win the title. Well done to them all.

On a beautiful September day Wittering ladies welcomed 40 ladies from surrounding clubs to play bowls in their Sapphire anniversary Ladies Tournament in memory of Jean Edwards.
After partaking in a glass of punch and photographs, Snowdrop pins, donated by the men’s captain Gwilym Morgan were given to each team member before a spider in aid of the Snowdrop Charity.

The ladies then played a close and enjoyable game of bowls with Rogate ladies winning overall.

Dinner was served courtesy of Jim Slogrove and his friends Colin and Sue, and waiters (men club members) looked after the visitors.

Presentations and a vote of thanks to all who helped, participated and donated was given by the President Frank Bray.

The Witterings Ladies entertained the Portsmouth and District Women’s Bowling Association (WBA) on Wednesday 2 July.
This was the first time they had played against the Hampshire Ladies team of 6 rinks, with a team of Ladies from Bognor BC joining with the Wittering Ladies to complete the match.
Everyone enjoyed the occasion on a beautiful sunny afternoon in East Wittering. The afternoon started with a ‘spider’ which was won by Judy Bangs – with donations to the Snowdrop Trust from the players.
After a very closely fought game which the visitors narrowly won, everyone enjoyed a lovely meal followed by jelly, ice cream and fresh strawberries!
Captains Ros and President Joan both thanked all those who had worked hard to make the day a success and we look forward to a return match to Hampshire next season.
