NOVEMBER 9th. PRESENTATION EVENING

posted 1 Dec 2013, 05:39 by Jen Knotts

A very successful and competitive season was brought to a close with dinner, presentations and dancing in the village hall.
A large number of members and friends attended and it was good to see the newer members receiving their trophies.
The tables looked beautiful, the food, (provided by the Boulevard) was great and thanks to Lindsay and Judy Bangs who organised
the event everyone had a most enjoyable evening.

The 2014 season  will soon be here - let's hope it's as sunny as the last one.

SEPT.7/8th 2013. FINALS WEEKEND - REPORT & RESULTS

posted 9 Sep 2013, 04:31 by Jen Knotts   [ updated 9 Sep 2013, 06:38 ]

This year the weather was lovely during the season and all our competition matches were played more or less on time. It is good that so many Club members entered our competitions.

The triples weekend went well and the 2 winning teams played on Finals Weekend.

We were largely fortunate with the weather on Finals Weekend although at times on both days there was some rain. It was good to see many spectators watching the matches. All matches were worthy of Finals and were very competitive.

The Saturday of finals weekend saw Lindsay Bangs narrowly defeating Anthony Gander in the Handicap singles. Dave Bell and John Hardy beat Jim Slogrove and Geoff Harsant in the Men’s Pairs. Fred Knotts, Frank Bray and Steve Thomas then beat Carole Tuffin, Alan Somerville and Lesley Swift in the Triples. The afternoon saw Chris Jelf beat Mike Thresher to win the Juniors and Fred Knotts beat Jim Slogrove to win the Veterans. Carole Tuffin then beat Jean Edwards to win the Ladies 100 Up and in the Men’s Singles Lindsay Bangs narrowly beat John Hostler.

On Sunday morning Paul Chivers beat John Hardy in the Two Woods. Then Carole Tuffin and Kate Nixon beat Jan Derkatsch and Lesley Swift in the Ladies Pairs. In the Club Pairs Lindsay Bangs and Chris Jelf beat Marina Aylward and Pat Hutton.

On Sunday afternoon the Men’s 100 Up was won by Paul Chivers who beat Lindsay Bangs. In the Ladies Singles Julie Mulligan beat Chris Horsley. The Championship was won by John Hostler who defeated Gwilym Morgan. The Victor Ludorum was awarded to Lindsay Bangs.

A big thank you to all who helped. This includes Gwilym and his team who prepared and set up the green, the scoreboard turners (wiggies), the markers and our umpire Tony Nixon, Judy Bangs and Dave Clapton for a lovely BBQ each day, and to the bar staff. Also a big thank you to Fred and his team for all their hard work in making the club grounds look marvellous!

AUGUST 11th. CAPTAIN LINDSAY'S CHALLENGE.

posted 16 Aug 2013, 04:41 by Jen Knotts

On a glorious sunny afternoon, mens' captain Lindsay Bangs welcomed 45 bowlers to a fun bowling afternoon. After an initial spider, with voluntary donations for the Snowdrop Trust, members enjoyed 3 sessions of 6 ends, teams being selected randomly and players keeping individual scores throughout. Interspersed between these sessions, three games were organised, namely "the castle," "10 green bottles" and target bowls. The castle was a wooden structure constructed by Terry Mulligan, with 5 arches through which woods had to travel to make a score. The 10 green bottles were arranged in a pyramid shaped format with values from 1 to 10. Members then had to bowl and scored according to the value of the bottles they knocked over. Judging by the conversation and laughter, the games were enjoyed by everyone.

Winners were:
Castle game Eric Shoyer
10 green bottles Gwilym Morgan
Target bowls Alan Somerville

Overall winners of the 3 sessions were Jim Slogrove for the men and Maureen Mulligan for the ladies.

When bowling had finished, all participants enjoyed drinks and food with Judy Bangs preparing hot pork baps (with stuffing and apple sauce!) followed by a choc ice with a team of ladies helping to serve. All the food went so bowlers must have been hungry after the efforts of the afternoon!

A grand raffle was held with all prizes donated (thanks, everybody). From the money raised, a donation will be made to the Snowdrop Trust and the balance will go towards a new water heater for the club kitchen to replace the ageing urn.

Thank you Lindsay and Judy for your generosity  and wonderful organisation which ensured a most successful and happy afternoon for all.

JULY 27th & 28th. TRIPLES WEEKEND

posted 29 Jul 2013, 04:18 by Jen Knotts   [ updated 2 Aug 2013, 11:01 by Witterings & District Bowls Club ]

Our triples weekend was played on a good green (thanks to Gwilym) and we were lucky with the weather with much sunshine and a little light rain

Each of the twelve teams played five matches of ten ends during the weekend. The thirty matches played were very competitive and many were won by a shot or two and four were drawn.
The Blue Group had an outright winner with Carol Tuffin (skip), Alan Somerville and Lesley Swift winning three of their matches and drawing another. They narrowly beat Marina’s team by one point overall.
The White Group had two teams who each won four matches. The team going through to play the blues on finals weekend are Fred Knotts (skip), Frank Bray and Steve Thomas, who narrowly beat Lindsay’s team on ends won over their five matches played (33 compared to 30 ends won).

Many thanks to Judy and her team (Di, Jan & Terry) for providing bacon rolls and coffee on the Saturday morning and lunch on both days (and washing up!). Thanks also to Tony for being our Umpire and to Carol and Jen for running the bar.

Thanks to all who took part in an enjoyable bowling weekend. This included three new bowlers who joined the club this year (Helen, Graham and Trevor). Some photos were taken during the weekend and these can be found in the Photo Galleries or by clicking here.
